Who this is
LookoutNVR is a product of LTC Labs LLC. The recorder runs on hardware you own. The phone and tablet app (Lookout) and the desktop viewer connect to that recorder. Lookout Cloud is optional, for remote access and support.
What we do not do
We do not sell personal information. We do not run ads. We do not use an advertising identifier. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Recording and live view
Video, stills, and motion events live on your recorder. The phone app shows them to you. A still or a clip you save goes into Photos on iPhone or Pictures and Movies on Android, because you tapped Picture or Clip. The app does not read your photo library.
When you connect on your own network, that traffic goes to your recorder over HTTPS. The first time the app sees the recorder's certificate it pins the fingerprint and refuses a different one until you say the recorder was reinstalled.
Sign-in on the phone
A local sign-in stores the server address and username on the device, and the password in the operating system's keystore. Those values are not included in Android backups or a device-to-device copy, so a restored phone does not sign in as you.
A Cloud sign-in uses the email and password for your Lookout Cloud account, then reaches the paired recorder through the relay. Cloud is a convenience. It is not required to record, detect, or watch cameras at home.
Alerts
The recorder decides what happened (zones, people, vehicles, animals). Each phone keeps its own switches for what it wakes for. Those preferences are stored on the device and, when you are signed in, on that recorder so the same phone can recover them.
While the app is open, alerts arrive from the recorder and show as a notification with a crop when one exists. On Android, lock-screen alerts while the app is gone use Firebase Cloud Messaging when that project is configured. iOS lock-screen delivery while the app is gone needs Apple Push Notification service, which is not in this build yet; alerts still arrive while Lookout is open.
Answering Not real, Correct, or Quiet 1h on a notification talks to your recorder. It does not send the picture to us.
Lookout Cloud
If you create a Cloud account we keep the email you signed up with, the recorders you paired, licence and support tickets, and the minimum needed to run the relay. The About page is the design: the relay is a lightweight proxy. Camera footage is not kept in Cloud as a recording archive.
A Cloud account is closed from Support at lookoutnvr.com/support. The phone app does not create Cloud accounts.
Diagnostics
The phone writes a local app-errors.log on the device so a hang can be pulled from that phone. It is not uploaded. Do not put a password in it; the app does not write credentials there.
Permissions the phone asks for
- Network, including the local network, to reach your recorder.
- Notifications, so an alert can buzz this device.
- Add-only Photos (iPhone) or Pictures and Movies (Android), only when you save a still or a clip.
The app does not ask for location, contacts, the microphone, or the camera on the phone.
Children
LookoutNVR is a security camera product for a home or a small business. It is not directed at children under 13.
